Old Dogs and Children introduces us to the memorable Bright Birdsong, a strong-willed, compassionate matriarch, and to the four generations of her family - a family that has been in the forefront of social and political change through much of the last century. Bright is a 68-year-old widow whose quiet life is suddenly interrupted by a series of crises: Her son Little Fitz, the Governor, is faced with losing an upcoming election because of a scandal. Her estranged daughter, Roseann, asks to leave her 10-year-old son Jimbo with Bright, opening old wounds in the process And then there is a windfall of fifty-thousand dollars in a supermarket giveaway. Everybody wants her money, including Flavo Richardson, the town's black leader and Bright's lifelong friend, with whom she has fought civil rights battles, who demands she take on a new challenges. Bright must confront the consequences of choices she has made in the past and reconcile what she has become with who she wants to be.
